2014 812 12 fret versus 2014 512 12 fret
« on: August 27, 2014, 04:08:22 PM »
I think there is a lot of love for the 2014 512, 522, and 812 12 fret models from TAYLOR.

I own a 2014 522e and a 2013 814ce. Both guitars are fantastic and both have their own personality. Currently I strum and fingerstyle soft rock/folk for the most part but anticipate learning to play more blues and country genre as well as venture into some jazz. The 522 is very balanced and even while the 814 is warm and lush and per Taylor's description has a toned down mid range response. You can really hear that difference between the 522 and the 814 quite clearly.

That said, I love the feel and fit of the GC design combined with the 12 fret scale length. So much to the point that I am considering supplementing or replacing the 814ce.

My question is how similar are the 512ce 12 fret and the 812ce 12 fret in sound and volume. The cedar top of the 512ce supposedly responds well to a lighter touch (which is my style, I don't really attack the guitar and I do not fingerstyle with nails). Do the new design features of the spruce topped 800 series give it an improved response to a lighter touch comparable to the cedar topped 512?

Thanks for any viewpoints based on experience with both guitars.

Sprintbob,

Are you specifically interested in a 12 fret model? Both the the 12 fret and the 14 fret GC models have the short scale. The difference will be in the tone but some people are uncomfortable playing a 12 fret model. Have you played one?

All other things being equal I think you would hear a huge difference between mahogany/cedar and rosewood/spruce regardless of the body style.

As cliche as it sounds only you can decide which is right for you my fellow picker!

I'm looking at 12 fret guitars. Just found out there is a road show scheduled in a month 4 hours from my home so I think I will plan to attend.

Definitely worth the trip. Won't be one near me for awhile.

Have fun!
