Case Labeling
« on: March 28, 2014, 05:56:37 PM »
Has anyone here found a good way to label their Taylor cases?
In the rack they all look the same. It would be nice to label them 514e etc on the case.
The best idea I have going right now is to get some stencils and use a bright Sharpie to color in the numbers/letters.
I don't do well with spray paint....
Anyone?

MUCH better than stenciling on the case.  At the Road Show, they had masking tape with the guitar model written on that on each case.

How high tech do you need to get?  A simple label maker tag would work; otherwise Michael's idea of a custom name tag would stay on the quality road.

a label maker tag may have a tough time staying stuck to the textured outer case covering

on second thought, the first link i put up has the ink "fused" to it, rather than engraved &
it's not recommended for use in direct sunlight, so rather than having the lettering fade away -

I had some press-on letters about 3/4" high laying the office from another project.  I put "D" for the dreadnought, "K" for koa, "B" for baritone, "12" for the 12-string, and "14" for the 414.  These letters are stuck on the Taylor nameplate.  Didn't need to label the GS, as it is the only brown Taylor case in the herd.  I had to label them after I showed up for a jam with a guitar I wasn't expecting.  It is tough to play for over two hours on a 12-string.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.
*Gone but not forgotten:  a 2001 414ce, 410, 354-LTD twelve string, 314-N, 416-LTD baritone, T5 Classic, 615ce, 2006 GS-K, 1996 (first year) Baby

Lots of good ideas so far. When I had two black Taylor cases, I did a label for each case and stuck them on the flat part of one of the latches. Don't have to worry about it now.....I have one black case and one brown one....pretty obvious.

I put a label maker address tag on my Yamaki's case in 1970.  The tag is still in place.

At a tradeshow once, somebody gave me a luggage handle wrap--made of neoprene w/ velcro. It was blue and it made my bag (a black Samsonite) much easier to spot at baggage claim. Just a thought, if you got two of those in different colors, you could wrap the case handles and then only you would know which case is which. You could get really fancy and have those handle wraps custom monogrammed (or silk screened) with the model numbers.

Something like this...

Thank you all for the great ideas!  :)
I think I'm going with Captain Jim's solution for now. Masking tape and a sharpie should be just fine.
It can be replaced as needed and gets the job done....and best of all...it's cheap!
I really liked the luggage handle things too...might have to look into that someday.
Thanks again to all! I know I have a roll of masking tape around here someplace....

Sorry I'm late to the conversation.  I use a Brother P-Touch to label all my cases  Adheres to the case just fine and travels without trouble.  Here's a pic to give you an idea of how it looks...:

color coding -
http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-497919/Belkin-6-pk-Cable-Ties.jsp?ci_
mcc=ci&srccode=cii_17588969&cpncode=26-319279169-2&CID=shopping15

just wrap around the handle & no worries about a label getting rubbed off or adhesive residue -
depending on the # of guitar cases, one may have to double up on the colors & have a color
code card to remember which case is what, but that's not necessarily a bad problem to have ;)
