Beginner, First Time Taylor Owner
« on: February 20, 2013, 03:53:38 PM »
Hey! I'm a 52 yo beginner from Mississippi. Been playing about a month and just bought my first Taylor, a DN3. Great to be on here, as I have already come across a boatload of useful info. Thanks to all for sharing. Just changed out my strings last night and hit my first barre chord! I'm sure I'll be on this board pretty regularly.

Welcome aboard and congrats on the DN3 - nice way to start playing!  When I first started playing (48 years ago), Al Gore had not yet invented the internet, so you had to go to music stores to connect with other guitar players.  Come to think of it, Taylor wasn't around yet, either.  Good timing on your part!  A barre chord within the first month?  Two thumbs up for that... must be your dedication AND a great guitar!

Best wishes,

Thanks guys. And Cap, I did have to switch to the Elixir lights before I could hit that clean barre chord!

Hi Shelmag, I was also in my 50s when I started, a few years ago. It has turned out to be one of best things I ever did, don't know where I'd be without it.

I confess that I still struggle with barre chords, but what is life without a challenge  ;)

Hi Shelmag, Welcome to the fourm.  I use Elixir as well, I think they are the best.  good luck from another 50's plus.

Hi Shelmag, I am also in my 50s (58) started playing when I bought a GSMini about 6 months ago and i love it.. love playing thanks to Taylor and I hate the fact that I now have to go buy a DN3 so I too can hit a barre chord clean .. does the DN3 come with a cutaway  ???
I'm not sure I can afford to stay here .. Have a Mini.. looking at a 114.. then a DN3.. wow

Congratulations on your purchase and desire to learn.  You certainly picked a nice instrument .  There are many free resources on the internet for beginners.  This guy can take you pretty far by yourself: www.justinguitar.com. His beginner course is very comprehensive and it's suggested donation only.
