LR Braggs Venue
« on: June 28, 2013, 11:19:10 AM »
Have a friend letting me borrow one these this weekend for a gig.  Any of you guys use this or have used one in the past?  Any setup suggestions?

Thanks

Edward

Hi there,

Been using a Venue for several years now (and before that a Baggs PADI) ...it's an excellent unit, IMHO: dead quiet, completely transparent, and offers as little or as much tone shaping as you like.

As far as how much to tweak it, aside from the obvious personal tonal preferences, it also depends on which ES you have, the earlier versions "needing" more mid cut, and the current-generation ES needing very little tone shaping (I tend to cut at around 5-600Hz and around 1K, more or less).   And I do not use the pre-set notch filter with the ES, though it can be useful for other transducers that may have a propensity toward feedback  BTW, I've tried it with both a balanced and unbalanced cable and find zero improvement in using a balanced line.  A good-quality 1/4" cable straight into the input, and the XLR out to the snake yields superb results in my experience.  Hope that helps you a bit :)

The 2nd-gen ES needs (to my ears, anywho :) ) some cut in the mids to sound more naturally "acoustic" on stage, but still comes off superbly well live.  The boost is excellent: clean,  transparent, and user-definable level ...exactly what you want a boost to do.

The Venue is easily one of the best floor-DIs out there, IMHO, for the simplest reason it works so well.  It is so versatile in how it accomodates a wide range of input levels (useful if you have guits with different pickup systems), and gives you what you want without adding anything you don't.  But my one gripe: the tuner stinks ...flat out bad and nary usable.  One would think in a unit of its considerable cost and with Baggs' stellar reputation they could load it with a decent tuner ...bleah!  I thought mine was a bad unit until I read that many others feel the same.  Thankfully, that's small potatoes given it does everything else so well.  Happy gigging! :)
