So sad to hear about the passing of this legendary and highly  influential guitarist, singer-songwriter. He will be greatly missed.

A major early influence on my music...got to see him in concert three times...what a sweet, gentle spirit! I will honor his memory today by being especially kind to others.

I liked what Stephen Stills had to say about Havens:

"But he sure knew what to do when they were begging for someone to go on first, when all those people showed up at Woodstock".

Havens played for almost three hours.

An astounding ambassador of music was he.

Rest in peace, Richie Havens. I saw him perform at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA some years ago.

My wife & I are lucky enough to live in an area that Richie frequented. The Temple down the street, The Odeum Theater in East Greenwich, and the Narrows Theater for the Arts are all places that Richie frequented multiple times a year. We've seen his shows in small venues so often that he knew us by name. He'd ask us why we never sat in the first row and my answer would always be "Because I don't want to pick pieces of your picks out of my teeth!"
He gave me a couple that I still have...both split down the middle!
