T5 electric issue
« on: October 26, 2014, 12:36:49 PM »
I accidentally touched both + and - blades in the battery case with a steel blade. There was a small spark and then nothing... Is there a fuse ? Where is it ? and how do you change it / take the board out ? A step by step approach would be appreciated.

this is the most complete resource i could find, regarding the Taylor string ground fuses
http://www.acousticguitarforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=340409

T5z - T5 should be similar, if not identical

ES1 (ver 3)

hopefully it'll help get you back, up & running

good to see you here, Andy :)

Hello Michael,
Thanks. I was looking for a glass fuse, my T5 arrangement is different. I tested it as in the attached picture and it doesn't look shot, the Ohm-meter reads 107 Ω. Does anybody know what happens when the battery is shorted between + and - in situ ?

It's not clear when you say "... and then nothing..." after you noted the sparking, but I presume you meant that you checked the operation of the guitar and nothing worked.  Did you replace the battery before checking the guitar's function?

Usually in a situation like you describe, the battery could have been shorted out.  I've heard of such things more in connection with car batteries:  where someone carelessly lays a metal tool across both terminal leads, and shorts out the battery; the rest of the car's circuitry is usually fine.

If you've not tried a new 9v battery, I'd recommend doing that before tinkering any further with the guitar's innards.

hi Andy,
the second picture in this link shows the original glass fuse,
below the multicolor wire bundle & above the string ground temination
http://s646.photobucket.com/user/jonfields45/library/T5z%20Fuse%20Replacement?sort=9&page=1

the 10mA glass fuse is being replaced with a 50mA fuse in those pics

the glass fuse looks like this
https://www.taylorguitars.com/taylorware/es-ground-fuse-trimmed

i don't know what the exact resistance value is on a good 10mA fuse (107 ohms sounds reasonable),
but if the new battery (tested to verify it's good) tim suggested produces no change, you could try
running a jumper (if you don't have a replacement fuse) & if there's still no change, i'd call Taylor CS

All: thanks for your suggestions. I tried a new battery but no joy, then I put the old battery back and bingo! I assume the short was not the cause of the problem.
It was great participating in this forum, I'll come back to it more often because I learnt quite a few useful tips.
Best, Andy

That's odd...  But, hey, as long as it's working now...  Maybe the 'trons just needed to get reset...? ???
