John Pearse Acoustic New Medium Gauge
« on: May 30, 2015, 12:32:01 PM »
Now that elixir HD lights have become so popular, has anyone tried the John Pearse New Medium gauge strings?

Gauges are the same as HD lights except 3rd string is 24 (JP) instead of 25 (Elixir) and 6th string is 55 instead of 53.

ps  JP strings are on sale at Just Strings for the next month.

I'm thinking that JP phosphor bronze are becoming my strings of choice. I have a set of new mediums in my box, I'll have to try them on one of my GA's sometime soon.

That's a good question.  As a caveat, it may be my guitar is just opening up, too.  For some reason it's become a complete cannon.  The only negative aspect to the JP's being so loud would be that I have to really lighten my attack (which I didn't think was that hard to begin with) in order to sing along with it.  It's almost like I could use a little PA just for my vocal, ha!  I'm about to change back to my normal Martin FX (Flexible Core) PB Lights.  I'll let you know if I notice a change in volume.  Really liked the JP's though, but think i still prefer the Martins (which are also cheaper :).  I'll post again with my comparison soon.

I tried the Martin FX on my 1930 Martin 2-17 but ultimately switched to DR Sunbeam 11's, which are round core strings and, like Martin FX, have reduced string tension(regular light strings caused the belly to bow on the little 2-17 significantly).  I just find the Sunbeams give me richer tone;  DR calls "11's" medium-light and "12's" medium, BTW.  Might be worth a try for you for something different.  Not often available in stores;  check Just Strings or similar internet companies for info and pricing.

I've been a big fan of JP strings and use PB lights on most of my guitars.  They're the house brand for Froggy Bottom Guitars (80-20's on all, including mine).  Since I carry a Medicare card it might be that I'm not hearing the loudness of the JP's;  I have had complaints that I play too loud on occasion (I play primarily fingerstyle).

I didn't even know JP had those. I do need to check those out.

I've been a JP phosphor bronze user since 1989. I have yet to find a string I like better.

Interesting story - I had to buy a different set last week because the local music store was waiting on a shipment and I had to change for my weekend gigs. I grabbed a set of D'Addario phosphor lights...incidentally the strings my 812ce shipped with. I simply didn't like them as much. They were thinner sounding (a little harsher trebles and thinner bass) and noticeably much quieter. My wife (also a musician) noticed it immediately, which I expected. She walked into the music room saying "I could;t figure out which guitar you were playing- it didn't sound like any of yours". But when my 8 year old son walked in and said that my guitar sounded "quieter and smaller", I knew it wasn't all in my head (which is always a real concern when you're mentally comparing sounds).
