Catch the new PresentationSeries in W&S?
« on: November 02, 2015, 09:03:36 PM »
As per the current installment of Wood and Steel, the new PS sports macassar back/sides.  Nice!

In the many years I've now had the pleasure of owning Taylors, I have rarely ever seen this gorgeous wood applied.  And did I not happen upon a 2013 616 SpringLtd a couple of years ago (which is euro-spruce over macassar), I would never have known what a lovely species this is!  Aesthetics, it's a flat-out stunner with a dark, chocolaty hue accented by lighter streaks.  But sonically, it has a deep, focused voice with depth and richness, all the while maintaining a tonal clarity as if each note were "outlined" as it punches through the soundhole.  Thick, yet defined.  I'd almost describe it as a "rosewood-plus" if that means anything.

While I never see myself getting a PS guitar, it's nice to see Taylor "validate" this exceptional wood by granting it top-tier model status, as their premium rw and Brazilians have in years past.  Kinda makes a guit I already love just a little more special ;)

In spite of my BTO  disaster last year, I haven't given up on Macassar Ebony. I still see an Adirondack topped Macassar GA BTO in my future.
My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

1997 Cujo14 - old growth cedar/black walnut
2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

I also own one of the 2013 Spring Limiteds (mine is an early 614ce in Euro Spruce/African Ebony) and it's one of my favorite guitars too; it rings like a bell!

By chance, I was able to play a new Macassar PS14ce during the recent Taylor event at Empire Music, and I liked it every bit as much as my 614ce-LTD.

I would surely love to try a PS series with the Macassar. visually it is beautiful.  I have also heard many a good thing about the tone, I wonder if it would be tone I would like?  The beauty is un questionable, but man O man for me their is to much beauty.  I would feel uncomfortable playing it with anybody around, yes I feel unworthy.

I recently bought a GA custom sunburst with a florentine cutaway with Macassar Ebony back and sides and a cedar top.  I love it, but I would not characterize it as "Brazilian-like" in any way, my 1997 714-BRZ is much more complex sounding, very different from my new GA.
