T5 low frequency buzz coming out of amp
« on: February 07, 2017, 09:58:25 AM »
Calling on other T5 or T5Z owners to see if they experience the same. When I plug my T5 into either my Yamaha THR10C desktop amp or my Fender Mustang 3 and turn any volume or gain on, I hear a low frequency buzz/hum that is not overwhelming but there all the same. I checked the setup with a stray voltage detector for ground loops or stray AC voltage along the guitar and cables and detected nothing. All power cords on the amp are three prong with working grounds. Once you start to play it's not that noticeable but you'll hear it if you pause or stop. In viewing a YT video troubleshooting similar noise, it suggested that if the noise stops when you unplug or when you turn volume and/or gain down, the source is probably EMI (electromagnetic interference) that is in the air and generated by any number of AC powered sources. The EMI can interface with a pickup and create a voltage that creates the buzz. Turn the power down to the pickup or unplug the guitar, noise goes away so this seems plausible. I'm just not sure what is the best way to deal with this.

Your experiences and any potential remedies appreciated.

I have experienced that problem a few times (but don't remember which guitar). It turned out to be my ceiling lights dimmer switch. The noise would go away when I turned the lights out. Try playing by candlelight  ;D

If it is EMI (and I'm not saying it is) try finding a portable AM radio and tuning off station somewhere around 200khz and you'll hear the buzz.
If you do hear it buzz then start turning things off until you find it.

Saying that, it might be easier to take your guitar and amp to a friends first!

I used to investigate troublesome ADSL's for a living and the AM radio was always the first line of attack.

I run my T5z through a Yamaha THR10 and Marshall AS50D.  I've not noticed any hum with the T5, but I did have it with an old Yamaha electric.  One thought: the THR10 will take batteries.  Have you tried it with that?  Although you have earthed mains adapters, using batteries should eliminate the possibility of it being a mains-related issue.  Also it means you can move room to room in case the cause is interference.

Ditto on the old style dimmers.  Noticeable on ES1, ES2 and T5z in my house.  Turn them off noise goes away as if by magic.  I did a lot of testing thinking it was the amp.  My guitar tech pointed out the possibility and that was it.

Does it go away if you touch the metal on the guitar jack?
If you move around, twist & turn, does it change?
