NGD....712e FLTD
« on: August 05, 2014, 08:59:17 PM »
NGD+5...I'm a little late. It took me a while to get a couple of pictures.

Last week I was calling Ted at L.A. Guitars to order a 12 fret.  He told me he had just gotten the new Fall Limited 712e.  It was a little more than I wanted to spend, but on impulse (which is not me), I said "I'll take it".  It arrived last Friday.  It is a beautiful guitar, basically the appointments of the new 800's with sassafras back and sides and rosewood binding and trim.

I had played several 12 frets before this one (512, 712 and 812), and this 712e has much more volume.  I'm guessing it's the 800 bracing along with the 3.5mil finish and special glues.  The sound has a strong bass, warm, woody mids, and sparkly clear highs.  When I first played it, the overtones in the high notes were almost overpowering.  After a day or two they moderated, and I found D'Addario PB's (lights) gave me the exact tone I wanted.

I have seen many pictures of the sassafras and in comparison, mine seems rather plain.  But I like it.  I want the guitar more for it's sound and playability than it's wild looks.  Anyway, I'm having fun playing it.  Really a nice guitar, and best of all, my wife loves the sound of it, too.

Your guitar is beautiful! The tone sounds great as well...I'm curious since I'm having a parlour built out of sassafras. I have heard a couple on the net and they have sounded pretty much as you describe. I've read that it has a tone between maple and walnut and some sources say mahogany. But of course a lot would depend on the top and size.
Taylor really makes some beautiful guitars...congrats and enjoy!

Congrats!
I got to play this piece briefly, as I just moved mere minutes from LA Guitar Sales (blessing or curse? tbd!)
I thought it sounded and looked very, very nice indeed..

Congratulations.  Enjoy. I like the look of the Sassafras.

Looks like you get the prizes:  first Sassafras 12-fret on the forum; and first owner to actually lay his hands on his new Fall Limited guitar...!  It'll be another few weeks before I can try out my 714ce Fall Limited... :(

Frankly, I haven't seen one of these Sassafras guitars that I've not liked.  They're like the 2013 Spring Limited Ebony or Koa guitars:  each one is visually unique and beautiful in its own right!  Yours is no different!  And based on your description of the sound (which is similar to what I've read from Taylor and other sources), it should sound great too!

Enjoy it when you play it -- and when you're just admiring it! 8)

It's great to see all the excitement surrounding these very striking Sassafras guitars. It reminds me of the buzz that occurred back in 2003 when the Taylor Pelicans were produced in a limited run of 63. I'm happy to own one of these light colored beauties, whose tone is somewhat similar to these wonderful Sassafras guitars. Here are some pics for comparison:

Thanks for all the comments, everyone.  I've been playing the guitar now for a week and a half.  I really enjoy the sound.  Also, I am finding it's very responsive to how you play.  I usually fingerpick with bare fingers. If I play soft, the sound is more mellow, but still has plenty of volume.  If I play hard, the notes ring out and it has more of a maple sound, but it still has a strong bass.

If you would like to see/hear a video review complete with what the guitar sounds like, I found this:
