Took the tour with my brother
« on: February 24, 2012, 07:30:17 PM »
My brother Dan is here from Seattle and we went over to El Cajon to take the factory tour. It was fun to see how everything went together. My brother is a woodworker and has made his own instruments, so he was watching curiously to see if Taylor did anything he could learn from. Well, no; they are set up to punch 'em out a little faster than the average guy with a table saw and planer! But he enjoyed it anyway.

Dan and I played a few of the guitars in the showroom after the tour. I tried a cocobolo/redwood GA that had a nice sound and a new 710 that was ok but didn't grab me. It was much more clear with the spruce top though, compared to the old cedar top 7xx guitars.

I also had a chance to try a mahogany GS Mini. It was surprisingly nice! nice clear sound, good sustain, pretty full. I was not expecting to like it so much.

Cool, I was at the Martin Factory last week and I'm looking forward to someday get to Taylor.  I was reading an article that mentioned that Taylor is only second to the Ford Motor Company when it comes to the number of CNC machines they use.  Pretty amazing.

That coco/redwood you played (if it's the same one) has the coolest sinker top I have seen. It had a bunch of green streaks in it. Sounded pretty amazing too.  Glad you had fun.

Thanks guys.

When I tried those other guitars, it just confirmed for me that my little GC-5 is the best fit for me. I did not get the same rush of delight from any of the guitars I played, although I appreciated them.

That's a good thing Sachi -- it cuts down on GAS and keeps $$$$ in the pocket. If I could only get my head there;-)
