Really disheartened!!!
« on: March 13, 2012, 10:59:51 PM »
I play in a band with a really obnoxious, in-love with himself, know-it-all.  We are supposed to be equal front-men.  Our next show in 4 weeks, I sing 5 songs in a 16 song setlist.  He just brought in the new setlist for our show following that one and out of 25 songs, I have 8 or 9.  I said something to our bass player tonight after practice and I am the bad guy, diva, starting a bragging contest.  If I hadn't just bought the new 614ce, I would just quit!  I have way too much money tied up in instruments and equipment to not play music, but it seems like it is something all the time in a band.  It has disheartened me so much, I would sell everything I had music-wise and find a new hobby if I wouldn't lose so much.  Should I just "go along to get along" or continue to get crapped on.  Opinions please.  Somebody make me a really good offer on a new T5-C1, new 614ce, 1995 810 and a new Fender Acoustasonic 150 amp.

Wow, I gotta think it'd be better to find a new group of people to play with rather than to give up music!

Tnfiddler!  Don't get discouraged!  Keep your guitars...and play!  Maybe a different group...but never give up on music b/c of some bully!   ;)

Don't get discouraged, try and continue to play while looking for a new group or.....start your own.  I see lots of flyers in the music stores looking for players.  Maybe a local music store has a jam and you can go that route to meet people.

Keep playing above all - and trip the guy with your amp cord during his songs..... ;D

I have never been in a band but if you start your own band it seems to me you can call all the shots.  Just don't back out on commitments you have already made.

See, that's the problem!  This isn't his band.  We have already had a meeting with him already about none of us wanting to be his band.  He knows this and knows that we are supposed to be equal frontmen.  He is just a glory-hog and wants all the attention.  I have slept on it and just decided that I am going to send him a text today and let him know that he forget about 5 of my songs and that we are going to be putting them into the setlist somewhere.  He will just have to go along.  I hate to leave this band because I have known our bass player since we were in Kindergarten together, our lead guitar and pedal steel  players are two of the nicest people you will ever meet in your life and we really do have a LOT of fun together when we play.  It's just the one guy and his holier-than-thou attitude.  It will work itself out, I am just going to have to give more input on the setlist.

If it isnt' his band, then if there is a clear leader, that person should have final say ... or at least, let it be democratic ... if someone who is not the clear leader isn't cool with that, then that person should be the one to start his own band ... MHO's of course ...

I guess because he is a phenomenal musician!!!  He is one of the best drummers I know, can play guitar and bass amazing, can sing pretty good, knows p.a. equipment like the back of his hand and knows how to work a crowd.  Everybody else in the band is the kind that just goes along, to get along and not cause confrontation.  Our bass player said last night when I was talking to him, that from now on the band as a whole will decide on the setlist.  It's supposed to be a band decision on everything.  So next practice will see how that plays out.  Thanks for all of you inputs!!

We all play for different reasons... some for the music, some for the attention.  Understand why you are there and it will make the process more tolerable.  In most of the bands I've played in, I was the lead singer, which puts you up front; never felt that made me "the leader" because there were always musicians who had brought unique skills to the band.  Unless it is a leader/sideman situation, though, it is a band; by definition, that means working and playing together.  Fuming about it won't resolve anything - have a band meeting and clear the air.  Be prepared that the offender may feel "ganged up on" and will walk.

Any mix of musicians brings unique egos with the unique talents... if it ain't fun, don't do it.  Work together to make it fun.  Otherwise, it's just another job.

from now on the band as a whole will decide on the setlist.  It's supposed to be a band decision on everything.

That's the ticket!  IMO, of course ... it has been my experience from playing in several bands through the years that no matter how talented (indispensable) someone is, if you don't have fun, feel stifled and aren't able to express yourself within the band setting, it "taint woth it" ... (unless you are making tons of money of course ...  8) )  As my dad would say, "Life is too short for that sort of thing".

Unless someone has hired you to be in THEIR band and you've agreed to take direction from them, then it should at least feel more like a democracy than a dictatorship.

I told him the last talk if he wanted to pay me$ 150 a gig, I would stand there and play my fingers off and not say a word. He got the point!  I tested him earlier and gave him songs I sing and asked him to add them. He said he wouldbut he isn't happy about it. I hate it for him!!!

I've been in & out of bands since the mid 70's. I've fronted them, sidemanned them, got'em started and probably broken a few up.
In every successful endeavor, there's always been 1 person with final say.Sometimes one of the members, sometimes the producer, sometimes the road manager.
Managing a band, group, or even an open mic or jam session isn't all that hard. What's hard is managing the egos( as Cpt. Jim pointed out).Anyone that plays in front of people has a pretty strong ego in my experience. Some ,like yourself, have learned to keep that ego in it's place.Others aren't quite that lucky.
Everyone in a group needs to have input, unless they were hired to perform a specific duty.If you guys went into this w/everyone equal,
then majority should rule ,albeit w/1person selected by the whole to settle ties.
I was in a group in the 80's that had 7 members. We all earned our cut. One of the rules we had, was the person that booked the gig had the final say.It worked pretty well until the bass player ran off w/the drummers wife ;). Kidding. The bass player and drummer changed their musical direction.
If you dread going to rehearsal( I rehearse w/the group, and practice alone), IMHO it's time to split. I don't know for sure if 8/9 songs is too few or too many, but the ratio seems about the same.If $150 is a raise, and you guys are playing every 4-6 wks, leave off a Coke a day and pay for that axe. In the meantime keep your ears open for another gig.
My  $0.02 worth.

The last band I was in, I did none of the booking. Either the drummer or the other guitarist took care of that.

The other guitarist was the primary vocalist and lead guitar player, and he was very, very good. We were fine with him taking the lead on just about everything. Set lists weren't normally a point of contention. For instance, we each could choose something that we did not want to play, and we would never play that. Tim would never, ever play "Cocaine". That was a song I reaslly enjoyed playing, because the lead could be a lot of fun. But, hey, Tim out it on "the list", so we never played it. Tim, on the other hand, was a huge reggae fan. Well, I would rather stick needles in my eyes than ever listen to reggae, so I put "reggae" on the list.

I saw that as a fair trade...
No one has ever been on their death-bed wishing they'd been more practical...
