Martin Silk & Steel strings
« on: July 05, 2013, 10:23:56 AM »
I've used them  for years on my 1978 Ovation Balladeer (Martin M130 .0115-.047). My Taylors are strung with Elixir Nanoweb 80/20 Light. I love the sound of the Silk & Steel on the Ovation, but they don't last long (4-5 weeks). I like Elixir because they last so long and I HATE changing strings!
I play fingerstyle, mostly blues and folk music, and never use a pick.
Just looking for some opinions before I order the Martins and pull the Elixirs...did I mention that I don't enjoy changing strings?
Note: My 114ce is just a bit bright for old style country blues and my 1969 Harmony is just plain hard to play...

1969 Harmony H162 (a blues machine!)

2010 Taylor 114ce

You didn't mention which Elixers are currently on your guitar.  If it's the 80/20s, you might want to try a set of Elixer Phosphor/Bronzes.  They'll darken up the sound somewhat after about a 2-hour break-in period.

every time i buy a new guitar, i play the NewStringRoullette game. i usually end up with D'addario's EXP16 strings. i used them almost exclusively on my 11 Ovations, the 2 Adamas' seemed to like the extra light EXP15's. my Taylors always end up with the EXP16's also. this knowledge doesn't stop me from trying a couple dozen different sets though. i do it "just in case"( i did own 1 guitar that i used Silk n Steels on). string choice is a purely subjective choice, ot much different than guitar selections. nobody can tell you what you are going to like.

You can also try elixir poly webs.  The thicker coating definitely tames the brightness over the nanos.
