PayPal e-mail scam
« on: May 28, 2014, 03:42:55 PM »
received an e-mail supposedly from service@paypal.com a couple of days ago -
when expanded, the sender's e-mail was info@a42aap5jrugla441h0wx.app0burzzbmuxwdbx7dckb43sugzbaiks05s.com

Important: We noticed unusual activity in your PayPal account (Ref: PP-XXX-XXX-XXX-XXX)

Log into your PayPal account as soon as possible &
there is a convenient
"Click here to confirm your identity" link ::)

called PayPal to verify the report with them & it was bogus -
the grammar was correct, as was the information in the footer, which is surprising

just a head's up for anyone that uses PayPal
it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...

Thanks for the heads-up, Michael! I haven't received it myself but will keep an eye out. I always log into a site by going there directly...not through links in emails. Not everyone will be as knowledgeable as you, and unfortunately some people will click on the link.

We got the same scam, wouldn't click on the link and also expanded the email address. Scary stuff though.

It maybe that future scams will be better targeted.

It has been widely reported in the UK,  that in March of this year,  ebay suffered a data loss that involved hackers getting access to the following information on ebay users:

Name; Address, Telephone Number; Email Address and also the ebay password (although the password data was apparently encrypted).

I would guess that this means they could send emails that would include an individual's name, which could make the email look very genuine.

So I think the advice to never click on a link in an email, is good and valuable advice, especially since I expect many people will use the same email address on their ebay and Paypal accounts.
