Trump's election - Taylor manufacturing in Mexico affected?
« on: November 11, 2016, 08:43:36 AM »
The president-elect mentioned during the campaign an interest in pursuing american companies that move their manufacturiing/factories to other countries, particularly mexico, as targets for penalties, higher taxes, etc.

Taylor manufactures the GS Mini in mexico, I hope he does not follow through on certain aspects of his campaign, this being one of them.  The GS mini is a wonderful guitar, and I'd imagine that if its production had to be moved to the US would cost significantly more than the $XXX it does now.

I doubt we'll we see significant change in this area, especially for those products already being manufacturing out of the USA, so the Taylor operations in Mexico are probably safe. (If they were to decide to shift their US made line overseas, that may be a different story).

In the spirit of keeping this civil:

1. Taylor didn't (or "isn't") "moving" anything.  They've had the Tecate plant for yeeeaaars now, manufacturing its model lines; and the mothership that resides in San Diego is a healthy, vibrant plant that has its slated models.  I foresee no compelling reason to "move" anything, let alone the Administration pressuring them to "move" anything.  Just doesn't make any sense to do so when the company clearly does its lion's share of manufacturing, and thereby employment, domestically.

2. If campaign rhetoric is to be taken at its word, ("if" being a considerable variable, to be sure), I take the new Admin's sentiment to mean future manufacturing that chooses Mexico/overseas over domestic manufacture.  Yet again, this ignores Taylor's position entirely.

3. Every incoming Administration rides into the Whitehouse on its campaign claims; then they hit the daily rigors of making things actually happen.  Perhaps a "wait and see" attitude is the better, more prudent tact, lest wild prognostication displace of our better judgment. :)

Am new, but why wouldn't this be "civil"?  ???

Anyway, Trump has been pounding Carrier because it is moving a plant from Indiana down to Mexico, and this was on the cover of today's NY Times.  It wasn't a concern strictly for Taylor, its a potential issue for ANY US manufacturer with factories south of the border.

As someone who is a HUGE fan of anything Taylor, anything that affects them is going to garner my interest for conversation.

Welcome Captain!

If you've seen the news (and I live in SoCal, criminy), the reaction to the new Administration has been less than civil.  My response was no aspersion to you, sir ...my apologies if that's how I had inexpertly phrased it!  Of course conversations can remain civil: this is the UTGF  :D

As for your orig post, I still maintain that the Trump sentiment was aimed at companies that build/move facilities outside of our borders, not those which already exist.  But I am reading between the lines here, and am by far no pundit on such things.  Suffice it to say, it is far too early for any such predictions.  And as for Taylor (to keep things on topic as this is no political forum), the past behavior and company track record of Bob et.al. indicates to me that the company does that which is good for its customers and workers, just because that's how he/they roll.  IMHO, of course. :)
