Extracting tuners in a slotted head
« on: April 17, 2016, 08:25:05 PM »
Hi:

Taylor sent me a replacement tuner for my 712ce 12 fret's low E machine because it had developed too much play.  So I have a new tuning machine and am ready to make an easy swap.  The string is removed, the screws to the old tuner are out.  Now, just grab old tuner with fingers and pull--right?  Uh, uh.  No movement.  So before I get the channel locks and put my right foot on the neck, can someone please explain how to remove the old tuner?  Direct me to a video?

Thanks!

Bill

I did a quick search for info as I'm sure you did too. Didn't see anything. I just got a 2016 slot head. Thought the tuners were quite stiff when I changed strings, even with no stings attached. Tells me that the post to wood holes is a tight fit. Also, the plate could be just a little stuck to the finish.

Thanks azslacker!  The plate is loose.  It's the post through which the string passes that won't cooperate. Is there. "Come along" for guitars?   8) 8)

No, but I've got a slide hammer that would work. It will pull wheel bearings out of the rear axle on a Corvette.

Ha!  I have a sense of humor even though I have an out-of "-commission guitar!  8)

I can certainly see the difficulty. Lot of nice wood all around the tuner. Sure not going to be sticking any pry tools in there. Let us know what you figure out.

Originally the tuner "posts" were tight on my NS34 where they went through the wood of the headstock.  I pulled them out, sanded the covered aprt of the roller lightly with 400 grit paper, and added paraffin wax to the hole as a lube upon the reinstall.

Since yours are essentially stuck, I would try using a leather pad or a wood block against the headstock, and with needle-nose pliers gently - repeat gently - prying against the most solid piece of headstock wood you can find.  Worst case, take it to a Taylor certified repair tech (if feasible) and let them do the work.
Taylors:  424-LTD (all koa) and a 114ce that lives with friends in Alaska.  Low maintenance carbon fiber guitars are my "thing" these days, but I will always keep the koa 424.  Several ukulele and bass guitars too.

Would letting the headstock dry out a bit -- say 30%RH for a week-- cause enough wood shrinkage to allow the tuners to slide out more easily?
