Manual string winder recommendation?
« on: May 15, 2017, 06:48:19 PM »

Can anyone recommend to me a good manual string winder. I bought a cheapo and the part where you insert the peg into was hard plastic and oversized So it didn't grab the peg well and just kind of rattled around over it. It is very hard to hold it in place. Does anyone know of a one that is a good fit for Taylor pegs and is maybe a little bit grippy on the inside of that component?

I know about the electric winders but I'm not after that right now.

Thank you

I think this one would work for you.

That would work great if he were stringing a Bass. What he wants is the D'addario DP0002 for guitar.

I use the cordless, power type all the time, but I also have one of these, that I take with me to festivals in case I need it (for use on any of my instruments). It has some play on the Taylor pegs. I think they all will, because they are a one size fits all. But, it works pretty good.

I have tried several manual winders over the years.  Most of them are pretty poor

The best one I have found so far is the Shubb one;

If you are re-stringing dozens of guitars then an electric one might be worth considering.

I have a couple of pretty standard ones that I picked up here and there; one I recently picked up at Willcutt Guitars for a very nominal cash fee, and is marked "Fender" -- but was probably manufactured by a bulk supplier for them.  I've found both to be adequate to the task of turning the tuner knobs when re-stringing either a 6-string or 12-string guitar.

Over the weekend I saw one of the salesman at Willcutt's using a Planet Waves multi-tool similar to this one (his was a different, perhaps an older model).  It looked pretty handy to me, having both the string winder and a small set of nippers built into them, plus a notch that will help pull the bridge pins.

Yes, that's like the one I have (above) and those features are nice. It's an "all-in-one" tool.

I bought something similiar to THIS.

I wanted the option to go manual or electric screwdriver.

I lined the inside/outside/top with very thin foam and duct tape.  It fits the tuning machines fine with the 'extra padding' and the headstock is also protected from the ends.

It worked great on the 816 (manual only) and the dreaded 12-string change is coming soon.

Thanks everybody. Yes, I had been looking at that planet waves tool  and just might pick that up. I don't think you could go wrong. There is also a Dunlop Winder that  looked like it worked well with a nice griP.  Probably worth checking out if anyone is interested.

I ended up ordering this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B001391TES/ref=ya_st_dp_summary

But I'm returning it. Really poor product.  Not recommended.

Thanks a lot. That one looks a little different than the rest and I may just pick it up :-)

I like the D'Addario String Winder. It comes apart and allows the winder section to be inserted into a Black & Decker cordless screwdriver. Or it can simply be used manually. Taylor showed a string change video while using one of them with a souped up Black & Decker screwdriver (it was immensely faster than the ones available in stores).

Yes, the D'addario Winder seems like the choice of a lot of people. Pretty versatile. I wanted something with a bit bigger handle so I ended up going with this Dunlop. It's pretty solid and I really can't find anything wrong with it.  The shaft is metal so that seems like a plus.  Sure it has a loose fit on the  tuner button  but all of them pretty much do.

(… Not sure why photo attachments always get flipped on their side??)
