Discontinued Taylor Solid Body Guitars
« on: April 09, 2012, 12:04:22 AM »
Has Taylor discontinued producing Solid Body Guitars?  I noticed that several sites say that the current models are discontinued.  I just found out about them and am very intrigued, it would be too bad if they weren't available.

Solidbodies are on the 2012 price list, one is featured on the back cover of the latest Wood & Steel, and Bob discusses in his letter this month how Dave Hosler is in the throes of developing a new pickup for the electrics.

Based upon this info, I would venture a guess that your information is incorrect.  Historically, they did discontinue the SB Custom model at the beginning of last year.  However, the Classic and Standard models are very much available.

The SolidBody Configurator feature of Taylor's website continues to render results. If solid-body guitars had been discontinued, I doubt that build-your-own feature would still be available.

Which sites are making the claim?

I think it may depend on the particular guitar. Also, if specs have changed, it's possible that the pre-change models are what you're looking at.

Also, it may just mean that the purveyor's of the website are doing a tap dance. I know of one dealer which wasn't carrying a particular model. Instead of simply not listing it, they had it listed on their site (so they would show up in a Google search). Someone sees the link to that store in the search results and clicks on it. Once on that site, maybe they buy something else; perhaps more expensive, when they find the guitar they originally wanted is "discontinued".

It's the internet bait & switch...

As far as I know, all the models are still available. The only place around here you can get one is at GC and they only have T3's and T5's.

I don't know why more distributors aren't carrying them. My local distributor has dropped the Taylor line completely because, according to them, their inventory requirements are too extreme. But if that were true, shouldn't I be able to find all the SB's at GC?

I bought a NOS 2008 SB-1 Classic earlier this year. There didn't seem to be any shortage when I was actively looking. My deal included a brand new Taylor HSS loaded pickguard along with the factory installed mini humbuckers pickguard.

Judging by the response to my own thread about Taylor electrics and another one asking how many people had them, it wouldn't surprise me if Taylor did narrow down its production line with solid bodies. On this forum, the T-5 seems far and away the most popular electric Taylor, followed by a few rare votes for the T-3 and even rarer ones for solid bodies. Maybe that's just the demographic, though; this forum seems to be predominantly peopled by us middle-agers, and I suspect that most of us have long since kissed goodbye to any ambitions of being the next pelvic-thrusting rock god! Perhaps a younger crowd would be more enthusiastic about Taylor's electric offerings. My thread, asking how Taylor solid body electrics compared to Les Pauls, Strats and the like did not get a single response. Seems that the Taylor diehards, round here at least, are far more into the acoustics.

i had a couple of SB standards back when they first came out -
i like the playability, shape, design, aesthetics & build quality, but i didn't have the
patience to try to develop any type of real 'discernment', regarding electric gear

they found new homes before the HG pickups were released & now there
seems to be a very wide array of configurations available (alnicos too)

i had a hwy 1 strat & hwy 1 tx tele &, imho, the Taylor was a 'completely different animal' -
different design, different tone & the closest brands that might  resemble that type of 'newness'
(to me) would be PRS & gadow ... i think there will be more/different responses to this ? in 5 years ;)
it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...
