Gotoh 510 upgrade
« on: May 18, 2012, 10:19:06 PM »
My 710ce-SD came with the antique gold Ping made Taylor machines. I want to swap them out for Gotoh 510s. My question is, will any of the 510 series designs work? Is the footprint the same? I'm sure I'm going to have to cover the footprint of the Pings a litlle, but that's no big deal. Has anyone done this upgrade before? Any "gotchas"? Thanks!

I have no experience with tuner swaps but the link below will take you to a page that probably answers your questions.

Well, I got my Gotoh upgrade done. Not too tough. I used the gold 510 Contour machines and Madagascar Rosewood buttons. Looks a thousand percent better. Hope I'm healthy enough to ride and play!

gerald germany,

Do you mind sharing your source for the rosewood buttons? I've been looking for some stateside and seem to be finding every type of wood EXCEPT for rosewood.

Thanks.

lmii has wood replacement buttons in the 510 contour shape
some of them have been discontinued

Thanks, michaelw.

I added the 510s to my 814ce, and am now trying to match the buttons to the headstock overlay. I have been tempted to try the cocobolo, in the abscence of east indian rosewood, but all the coco I have seen is quite a bit more "over-stated" than the EIR headstock overlay on the 814ce.

madagascar rosewood may  be slightly closer to east indian,
in terms of grain structure  & color (variegation, etc) -
those cocobolo buttons really 'pop', imho :o

oh ... Ted, i almost forgot -
you may want to try contacting Bill Nichols to see if he is
currently accepting orders for, & making, tuner buttons
Bill's craftsmanship is top-notch :)
