Bridge pins for GS mini
« on: January 28, 2013, 09:29:12 PM »
I am looking to replace the bridge pins on my GS mini with Ebony. will the standard taylor ones work or is there another brand that will fit better. I have heard that they are not the same size as the full sized Taylors. Not sure how much truth there is to it or not.

I have replaced the pins on my mini with standard Taylor pins which work just fine. I think they are all the same size.
Blackbird, Froggy Bottom, Gibson, Goodall, Hatcher,
Kanile'a, Kinnard, Kwasnycia, Martin, Rainsong,
Ryan, Santa Cruz, Taylor, Voyage Air, Weber

The ebony pins in my experience were a tad larger. I lightly sanded them to fit. Very easy job and well worth it.

I changed mine for ebony ones off Ebay. They look nice but didn't make any difference to the sound. Slightly tighter fit too.

Picked up Taylor brand ebony/abalone bridge pins from Sweetwater. They all went in just fine except the 1st string as others have said. Lightly sanded it down and it fit ok. Definitely like the look of them. Not sure I notice any sound differences. Closeup is my avatar, but here's another shot.

I bought the standard ebony bridge pins from Taylor, and even though Bob has said they are slightly different sizes, mine fit perfectly. I can't imagine them fitting any better.
1993(?) 410 Special Edition (Rosewood/cut-away)
1995 412
1997 810

2013 Mini Mahogany
2014 522 12 fret
About two dozen other brands of guitars, mandolins, ukuleles, banjos and Venezuelan Cuatros, not to mention the flutes, pennywhistles and the piano.

I picked up a Koa GS Mini a few weeks ago. I ordered a set of the taylor ebony bridge pins with inlays and wanted to share my experience.

They fit perfectly on all strings except the low E.
For the low-E, the route in the pin doesn't go up high enough (because of the fat diameter of the low E string).
I fixed this by taking a small chisel and just extending the route (the canal in the bottom of the bridge pin that you align with the string) up a bit more to the top of the bridge pin.

I did this a little at a time until the pin fit nice a snug and bottomed out.

They look great and really class up the mini.

Cheers!

I also bought a GS Mini Koa recently, it arrived on Jan 3rd. Like you I bought a set of Taylor ebony pins with the abalone dots to replace the supplied plastic pins. Although the ebony pins were a little longer and thicker than the plastic all 6 went straight in. I agree that they do look very nice, especially when they catch the light.
