GS Mini action height
« on: June 05, 2013, 10:35:11 PM »
Just curious, but how high (or low) is the action on your GS Mini?

The low E string is 2/64 at fret 1 and 8/64 at fret 12.

The high E string is 1.5/64 at fret 1 and 6/64 at fret 12.

Neck relief passes the business card test.

Seems like the saddle may need to come down?

Those number are a bit high for my taste.  From the factory, Taylors tend to be about 6/64" on the bass and 5/64" on the treble.  I tend to take 2/64" off that for my optimal set up.  I did the same to the GS Mini I used to have.

I switched out to a bone saddle which bought it down a bit from the factory height to 6/64" and 5/64" at 12th fret - this feels comfortable for me.

Just eyeballing but mine is in the high range.

I have only used medium gauge strings but I'm a little concerned about tension. With a mirror I can tell that my bridge plate is getting pretty worn. Also the low E bridge pin pops up with a restring. Still enjoying this guitar a lot.

Standard business cards are made of 12 pt stock (1 pt is 0.001"). If the business card slips under the strings at the 12 fret easily, there is in excess of 0.012" neck relief.

Factory specs are 0.004 - 0.007" relief (1st & 14th fretted @ 6th fret), which is about 1/2 to 1/3 of what you have.

Before making any adjustments to the saddle, you may want to minimize the neck relief as long as you don't experience any fret buzz and then see where the action is at. Also, the action at the nut should be checked, which is typically .018" E to .014" e.

PureTone,

I adjusted the neck relief down to about .005 according to a feeler guage, and the action is still at 7/64 and 5/64.  I'm thinking of installing an ES-Go so I might take the saddle down a bit when I do that.
