My celebrity encounters are boring; mostly political, my own U.S. Senators Tim Kaine (who played a mean harmonica with my band once) and Mark Warner, and others, although I get to meet actors and musicians at political events: Michael J. Fox, Dave Matthews, Joan Baez, etc.

I have an artist friend who throws a "thank-you"/Christmas party every year.  Two or three years back I met the Olympic gold medalist, Jackie Joyner-Kersee there.  What a beautiful and gracious lady!  I have never been that close to a world class athlete before, and though she had retired from competition already, she was ripped!
The year before, the actor Cliff Roberstson attended.  I missed that one.

Now my friend could tell some stories!  He has met 3 presidents, the Pope, Charles Lindberg's wife Anne Morrow,  many actors, astronauts, the King of Spain, Churchill's granddaughter and musicians.  The best part is he still extremely humble.

Here is the link to something I posted about him on this forum a while back.  http://www.unofficialtaylorguitarforum.com/index.php?topic=1352.msg17698#msg17698

i don't know if this qualifies as celebrity status 'cause i just dont think about it like that.
about once a month or so when i'm home, a bunch of friends get together and jam on acoustics. i got aquainted with one guy that shows up when he's in town( he travels a lot like i do... but for a much different reason) and we hit it off pretty good( heck i went with him to pick out a new car).
i finally asked Bill what he does/did for a living.... Bill's George Thorogood's bass player !

There are some good stories here. Here's mine.
About 17-18 years ago while in a mall in Tampa, I met a lady who was wearing a denim shirt with a Green Bay Packer embroidery thing on it. I commented on it and told her I lived there when I was kid. She told she was Ray Nitschke’s wife. Hall Of Fame Linebacker Ray Nitschke! My first thought was, “yeah right.” She said he was in another store and would here in a few minutes. I turned around and there he was, one of my childhood heroes, shopping with his wife at the mall. His wife introduced us and they spent about 15-20 minutes talking to us like we were long lost best friends. At one point my wife was looking for something for him to sign when he pulled out a business card that folded open and signed it for us. Both he and his wife were very nice!

Relatively from the Nitschke era, got to meat Y.A. Tittle (QB of the '49'ers and Giants) in the early 60's.  Still have his personalized autograph; he still shows up at Giants special ceremonies during halftimes of games.

As long as we're stepping back in time, I was a big Eagles fan when they won the championship in 1960. In particular, I was a huge Tommy McDonald http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_McDonald_(American_football) fan and got a chance to play tennis with him in the early 1980s...

That's pretty cool! I've found a lot of the old players love taking to their fans. Living in an NHL town, I've also noticed those guys are pretty humble and give a lot back to the community.

He was one of the greats! A lot of the old Packers return to Green Bay multiple times each year.

I met Glenn "Shake & Bake" Doughty (Baltimore Colts) when I was in the 6th grade. I went to school and played youth football with Milt Plum's son, David. We lived in the same neighborhood. I found this article about Milt and had to share it: http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_24219239/milt-plum-surprised-he-holds-record-peyton-manning

While I was in professional school in Boston in the 1970's, I worked after classes with the New England branch of a national youth organization.  I set up a fundraiser which involved selling tickets for a Celtics game at Boston Garden. I arranged for a publicity photo shoot before another game--got to meet and be photographed with Don Nelson, then still a player.  Ps the Celtics gave me courtside seats at a press table for the game.

Another sports encounter. A few years ago I went to a wine tasting in Westchester NY. Also there signing copies of his new book was beloved Mets ex-star Rusty Staub. Common  mythology is that he retired in 1985, the year before the Mets won the 1986 series. I asked him if he was disappointed that he retired one year too early. He responded that he didn't voluntarily retire, that the G.M. wouldn't sign him to a 1986 contract and he was given the option of a graceful exit.
