Greetings from Boston
« on: February 01, 2015, 01:03:23 PM »
I started playing mostly folk stuff in the sixties, followed by electric rock. Then the music died. With a lot more time on my hands lately, I recently resurrected my interest and got an 818e. I play fingerstyle using my nails as picks. Still have my Gibson Les Paul Cherry Sunburst. My oldest current acoustic guitar is my J200 from the eighties. It has rosewood back and sides, with a lot of fancy inlays including slant-scripted golden-colored "the Gibson" on the headstock.  No cutaway or electronics and has a small pickguard. Been perusing this site and I like what I see. Thank you. Also appreciate Taylor not only for their guitars but especially for being so informative about acoustic guitars.

Yes it does, thank you. In spades.  The 818 is a wicked awesome guitar. I can play as quietly or as loudly as I want and it sounds just great either way. Treble notes sound surpringly full and are complemented by the rest of the guitar's range. Bass sounds like bass when struck by my thumbnail. This guitar seems to almost play itself.

boston music co? used to have a large guitar selection. closed years ago.
mosher music? closed even earlier. baseball writer and guitar player peter gammons used to work there while in college.
all of the old boston music shops except steinway are long gone. even the ones around berklee school of music. guitar center moved in accross the street from berklee on massachusetts ave when daddy's closed a couple of years ago. got my 818 at music emporium in lexington, also on massachusetts ave. great guitar shop.

Glad you're here.  Is it wrong that when I think of Boston I think of "Good Will Hunting" quotes?  Mostly, "How do you like them apples?"  Anyway, enjoy you're 818e in good health.  I'm pretty sure you're already liking them apples quite a bit!

don't remember any specific dialogue from the movie, but nothing jumped out as being 'wrong'. of course there were a couple of guys from boston in the movie, which should have helped. the apple quote is not unfamiliar to me, but if it is to you then it might be local or regional dialect. one word which is definitely regionalized is tonic for soft carbonated drinks. equivalent of soda or pop or sodapop elsewhere.

Don't forget bubbler (water fountain), jimmies (sprinkles), rotary ,(traffic circle), and grinders (subs/hoagies/heroes)

Add milk shake to the N.E. oddities list.  In the rest of the world, a milk shake is a nice, thick ice cream drink.  In N.E. it is milk with syrup.

Welcome Donlyn.  When I think of Boston I think of Sam Adams. The patriot and Beer!
Glad you're here.  Is it wrong that when I think of Boston I think of "Good Will Hunting" quotes?  Mostly, "How do you like them apples?"  Anyway, enjoy you're 818e in good health.  I'm pretty sure you're already liking them apples quite a bit!
I have never been to Boston, but I have heard and used the saying How do you like them apples.
Add milk shake to the N.E. oddities list.  In the rest of the world, a milk shake is a nice, thick ice cream drink.  In N.E. it is milk with syrup.
Milk and syrup is called chocolate milk where I live.
