Taylor Factory Specs Sheet
« on: August 13, 2015, 08:12:00 AM »
Hey all,

A Taylor tech shared this with me, so I thought I would pay it forward. As he and I discussed, this is potentially a starting point depending on your personal playing style and preferences, but it is good to know how Taylor sets 'em up originally for comparison:

Cool chart, thanks for sharing!

FWIW, go to your local Home Depot (or the like) tool section and they will have a small steel ruler that has graduations in whatever increments you like.  I bought one with fractions of an inch years ago for a few bucks.  Measuring takes out all guesswork; it's an indispensable tool, IMHO.

I hear you, you can get them cheaper and I'm certainly one to do that when I can. It's a bit of money, but it's "value" priced and will last forever. Nothing faster than this, and it's got decimal and /64 measurements all in one gauge. And small. And fasssst to use, especially that stairstepped action side.  8)

Thank you for sharing.  I should order the Stew-Mac. Just been lazy and use a set of spark plug feeler gauges that I've had for about 20 years.  Of course, at that time, lived a block away from an auto parts store.

Why is everyone so obsessed with measurements, geez? ::)

The "best" spec is the one that sounds and feels best in accordance to the player's style.  So no, measurements don't matter one whit.  BUT, if one ever wants to replicate the great feel (aka "action") of one guitar unto another, the best place to start is with measurements from that awesome guitar.

Moreover, if one is interested in ever setting up one's guitar(s) on their own, it sure would be nice to know what a given measurement means, or how that particular spec feels and sounds like.

Conversely, if one wishes to entrust a tech with all their guitar work, then that's certainly one's prerogative.

For me, it's a potential diagnostic tool. If the action is too high, is it because the relief is off, or does it need a neck reset, etc.

Not about measurements, it's about setup. Which is a dynamic and potentially changing concern, especially with acoustic guitars.

I just figure it's nice to have a base line to refer to if you ever need it.
