Taylor cases, opinions
« on: August 04, 2016, 11:30:58 AM »
Hi folks, this is my first Taylor acoustic, thus my first Taylor hardshell case. Most of my other guitars have Hiscox cases.
Can anyone give me feedback (good or bad)or share their experiences (again good or bad) with Taylor hardshell cases? They seem robust and are significantly heavy, but I wonder if they handles are equally durable?
Thanks.

I've not put my Taylor cases through any rigorous use or abuse; but they seem pretty durable, including the handles.

My brother bought an older, second-hand 710 with a Brazilian Rosewood body, and the case it came with had evidently seen some use; still, it was intact, fully functional, and after my brother did a bit of cleaning on it, looked downright presentable.

I'm not concerned about the case handles. It is the Tolex that I think is going to wear. I liked the old molded plastic cases, just my opinion. YMMV.

Years ago, I had several guitars shipped to my new residence. UPS damaged one shipment. Upon opening the box, I discovered a splintered Taylor case. But the guitar survived without a scratch. Enough said.
My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

1997 Cujo14 - old growth cedar/black walnut
2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

We were playing an outdoor gig a few months ago when one of our speaker stands got knocked over. A QSC K12 landed directly on top of my friend's Taylor case (which was flat on the ground, not on its edge) from a height of at least 8 feet. There was a small mark on the case, and no damage to his 614ce FE which was inside the case. The K12 still works, too.

That must have been quite an impact, we use K12's too and they're pretty heavy.

Yes, we were very impressed and relieved that the Taylor case held up so well!

Thank you, just the first hand experiences / feedback I was looking for - as mentioned,I have and have always used Hiscox cases which are very good cases, but one thing that I have not liked about Hiscox cases is that they are all the same size more or less, padding is added to the inside of the cases depending on the size of the guitar.
What I like is that my case for my 812e is proportional to the size of the guitar.

Thanks again and pretty impressive that you had a speaker fall from height on the Taylor case with guitar inside and no damage occurred!

Same goes with the UPS delivery and the case splintering, again no damage to the guitar.

I am very careful with my gear in general and i will be gigging a fair bit this is good to know.:).

the 1st gen tecate deluxe cases had handle rivets that were prone to become loose
(i've been cut by one) & smaller latches that had a tendency to want to separate,
but that was also partially due to operator error (the 5th latch was overlooked)

the current gen cases don't have quite as thick lining as the previous gen &
i believe that they are 3 ply, rather than 5 (on the el cajon cases 00-prior),
but they are definitely a step up, overall, from the SKB & access sourced
black cases & in terms of durability & protection, compared to other
builders OEM or outsourced cases, they stand up well, especially since
there is no additional upcharge for the deluxe case on 200DLX/up models
it's not about what you play,
it's all about why you play ...

Thanks MichaelW,good information. The Taylor Deluxe cases seem similar to the cases used by Maton and Larrivee in terms of materials used and durability.

It does make you wonder though,

If Amos dropped a 41lb speaker on a case with minimal damage then what the hell did UPS do to splinter Strumming Fools?

Yes, it does make you wonder about Strumming fools case.I have seen pictures of Hiscox cases also being severely dented and misshapen, but guitar intact.

The body portion of the case was relatively intact, but the area that contained the neck was splintered.

It must have been serious impact on the case and serious neglect by UPS.
