How many have ever said....
« on: November 17, 2017, 09:35:21 AM »
I have said on several occasions "I will never sell this guitar" or "this is a keeper" or "this one is a lifer", but after the honeymoon, or longer, maybe years have decided to move on.

Sometime ago I made the decision that I was going to whittle down my herd and did so.  The past year has been filled with bouts of desire but I have not purchased any in 2017.

I have been thinking of selling my one guitar that I said many, many times I will never sell this one it is my keeper.  I have not played it for some time and have been wanting a GC 12 string 12th fret.

This got me thinking and I had to laugh at my fickle self.  I have said those phrases about the new ones on several occasions, but now I am considering letting one go that I have had for a dozen years.  I think I am feeling guilty.

Let the therapy session begin...  8)

We've all been there to some degree or another. When you say you're feeling guilty though, consider this: if you're not playing it anymore, it deserves a better home. There, I just shifted from therapist to enabler in one sentence.

Moving on to the practical, let's face it, our tastes change. Some of our taste and desire is internally influenced, some externally influenced. If they were static, I'd say yes, that sounds fickle. But they're not, and ultimately it comes down to what will you enjoy playing moving forward.

Last, you can't go wrong with a GC 12 string 12 fret. The ultimate in ease of playing, the best in terms of comfort (couch playing, anyone?) and still that great Taylor tone. They're amazing guitars.

Hopefully that's helped.

i went through that with my cedar 914ce, was getting frustrated by the lower headroom. fast forward a few years, it opened up and is my favorite guitar sonically! keep it! you’ll appreciate the variety with multiple guitars.

Maybe this will help get you off the fence. No relation to seller, but it sure is purty....

THIS!!!   :D
For me, happened only twice: one with a Taylor, the other with a Les Paul.  Both now long gone ...but replaced with stellar examples that now prompt me to exclaim "keeper."  And I'm holding ...it's working ...so far :D

I have done both.

I bought a keeper acoustic 45 yrs ago and still have it and will never sell it.  It has nothing to do with the sound, it is the guitar itself. It was the first quality guitar I ever bought and I was heartbroken when I cracked the headstock knocking it over when camping.  It has a 40 yr old nasty looking headstock repair that  makes me smile every time I look at it now

I just had a T5z pro, a guitar I swore I would keep forever because of how great it played.  Well, I realized that all it did for me was play well.  I decided there was no reason to keep an almost $3,000 guitar that I could not get a good sound out of just because it played well on the couch.

I just picked up an acoustic I just love and I’m currently thinking, keeper.....ya, time will tell.

I hope I won't be kicked off the forum, but I said that about my 2011 GS8e and I sold it. The 1 3/4 nut width just killed my hand.

I then bought a Martin OMJM, but then after awhile said that I would sell it...but Martin doesn't offer many Engelmann Spruce tops...so just recently I decided to keep it.

About 6-7 months ago I added a Taylor 324 (Tas blackwood, and Hog top)...this one is a keeper for life.

I'm pretty content right now with my Taylor and Martin.  At some point if finances allow, I'd love to buy a BTO.  Don't feel bad for me, but if I were to have plugged all the money and time that I have plugged into the forum, I'd be pretty darn close to my dream Taylor  ;D  ::)

Meaning it definitely has more headroom now?

My "keeper" is my 2002 414. It's my first Taylor and it just does everything for me. It has the tone/feel/volume I love with fingerpicking, since it has opened up. The spruce top has aged beautifully.  And because I'm anal about my guitars, it is still mint. I really do think it's a lifetime keeper.....seriously.

I have to say, I don't think I could part with my 914, K24ce or my 562ce either. I love them and have no plans to replace them. Until these 4 came into my life, I've never had any "keeper" guitars.

Probably the wisest comment in this thread. While it may be interpreted as enabling us all to continue our "illness", it is nonetheless true. For me, it's borne out in the fact that I don't regret to this day any guitar that has come and gone out of my stable. I like what I have now, and this may be it for me...or not!
My Taylor Grand Auditoriums:

1997 Cujo14 - old growth cedar/black walnut
2014 K24e - master grade koa
2018 Custom GA - bear claw sitka spruce/mahogany
2019 614 - torrified sitka spruce/flamed maple
2020 714 - lutz spruce/rosewood

Although the relationship is relatively new (about 13 months), the honey moon continues with my 2013 PS56ce cocobolo 12-string.  I continue to pick this up as often as possible (and ignore the 816ce) because...it 'does it' for me.  It always puts a smile on my face and I cannot fathom another 12-string would be better.  The sound, the color, the smell...

I had serious GAS for a Taylor cocobolo guitar.  When I found one after searching over half a year, I never imagined it would be a presentation series (or a 12-string for that matter).  I remember my (not happy) wife stating "you bought what...and how much?"  Now she better understands that it is a 'lifetime guitar'.  It is better to ask forgiveness than permission. ;D

As an aside, I call this my 'Divine Intervention' guitar as I see two faces in the lower left of the back touching cheek to cheek.  To me, the faces appear to be Jesus and Mary.  Every time I see it I am reminded how the Lord blesses my life with His love and how truly thankful I am.

Check back with me in several decades...unless I am destitute, I will still have this guitar.
